The Salem Witch Museum, House of the Seven Gables, and the Salem National Historic site offer educational and entertaining experiences for students. For school districts south and west of Boston, forgo the drive and take the Salem Ferry. Students will learn a bit about Boston, Marblehead, and Salem Harbor while experiencing a ride on a high-speed ferry and seeing their home-state like never before.
If you haven’t taken your class or campers to the Boston Harbor Islands, what are you waiting for?! Your group will have a great time, starting with the ferry trip, then a Ranger tour, picnic lunch, and some time to explore. You will have a great time, too, and be amazed at how much history there is not just on the harbor, but on the islands as well. Georges Island has been the perennial favorite, with Fort Warren playing a significant role. The addition of the new Visitor’s Center with cool artifacts and a 9 minute film (just the right length) about the island make this a fun-filled trip. If you are looking for a more active adventure, bring kites, Frisbees, balls and gloves and head to Spectacle Island. Pre-arranged Ranger tours are available there as well, and if your group likes to swim, have them bring bathing suits and towels as well. Lifeguards are posted at the beach from the end of June through Labor Day.
Lesson Plans and Teacher Guides are also available.
